What is it ?
X File Explorer (Xfe) is an MS-Explorer or Commander like file manager for X Window (Linux or BSD systems).
It is written using the FOX toolkit and it is based on X Win Commander, originally developed by Maxim Baranov.
Xfe is developed since 2002 by Roland Baudin.
Xfe aims to be the best choice for people who are looking for a fast and light graphical file manager on Unix systems.
Yet another file manager?
Xfe is fast (thanks to the FOX toolkit) and light, with a small memory footprint. It is desktop independent: you always get the same look and feel whatever the desktop you use. Xfe's UI is highly customisable: you can change its colors and select among several icon themes. Xfe is powerful: it features a fast search dialog, a bulk rename dialog, custom scripts, root mode, disk usage, customisable key bindings, etc.
Xfe comes with a set of integrated tools:
- X File Write (Xfw), a text editor
- X File Image (Xfi), an image viewer
- X File Archive (Xfa), an archive viewer and extractor
- X File Package (Xfp), a package viewer and installer
Latest Xfe version can be installed without any dependency by just running an installer. It will work on any (not too old) Linux platform.

15/03/2025 - Version 2.0.1 released
This release fixes several bugs, regressions and a memory leak. The german translation has also been updated.

11/01/2025 - Version 2.0 released
This release implements several new major features:
- - a Places view has been added to the folder panel, featuring desktop folders, mount points and bookmarks
- - USB and MTP devices can be viewed and unmounted from the Places view
- - bookmarks can be edited (add, rename, icon change)
- - a bulk rename dialog has been added, allowing to perform rename operations on selected files and folders from the file panels and the search panel
- - in detailed view, columns can be shown/hidden and their order can be changed (in Edit / Preferences / File list)
- - a new X File Archive (Xfa) application has been added to view and extract archives (many supported formats)
- - Xfe has now a more modern and flatter look
- - new complete icon themes (default, XFCE, GNOME and KDE) have been designed
- - when copying files, the whole progress is now displayed, with copy speed and remaining time

This release fixes several minor bugs.
02/03/2024 - Version 1.46.1 released
This release adds support for RAR and Zstd archives (extract and create). A minor bug has also been fixed.

Several minor bugs have been fixed in this release. Some minor cosmetic changes have been done. The german translation has been updated.
